Full course description

Instructional Goals: 1. Prepare you, the teacher, to help students understand the complexity and meaning of social studies education. 2.Give teachers resources and examples for teaching social studies with best practice and theory. 3. Help teachers meet state and national expectations of social studies teaching and learning. 4. Focus on mastery of subject matter and student outcomes. 5. Explore inquiry as an important tool for teaching social studies. 6. Create an atmosphere of professionalism and respect Expected Learning Outcomes: 1. Create language arts integrated lessons that use best practice in literacy instruction. 2. Combine established web-resources with social studies pedagogy. 3. Use historical literacy lessons that help students think like a historian. 4. Evaluate civics oriented web materials. 5. Create a unit that corresponds to the C3 Framework. 6. Evaluate and create a rubric that corresponds to best practice teaching 7. Synthesize various social studies websites into a personal web page. Required Texts: None, everything is online These online USBE CANVAS courses have been designed for active educators who are working on fulfilling the requirements for specific social studies endorsements. While the courses are not completely self-paced, they are asynchronous. Coursework unlocks weekly, so that the participants engage in the course material as a cohort, one week at a time. Educators can work on the course material when convenient within each week of the course. This is a 3-credit course in collaboration with Southern Utah University (SUU). Once enrolled in the Canvas course, students will receive further instructions and a CRN for registering through SUU for credit. SUU requires a $69 recording fee for this course. Upon completion of the course, grades will be available on an SUU transcript. PLEASE NOTE: You may only register for two of these endorsement courses at a time.
