Full course description
This training provides foundational knowledge and skills to support students experiencing behavioral/emotional crises. Learners will acquire the strategies to engage in behavioral/emotional crisis management, encompassing prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery. Completion of this course partially satisfies the foundational behavior support training requirement outlined in R277-608-4(1). The completion of this training does NOT certify an educator or paraeducator to use an emergency safety intervention (i.e., physical restraint or seclusion).
Learning Objectives:
Module 1:
Learners will understand the impact of trauma and stress on the brain.
Learners will identify the phases of the crisis cycle.
Learners will identify proactive/preventative behavior support strategies for use in their setting.
Learners will identify considerations when working with students with disabilities who demonstrate challenging behaviors.
Module 2:
Learners will understand the five principles of safe de-escalation.
Learners will understand the team roles that will typically be assigned when responding to a crisis.
Learners will recognize that environmental factors influence student behavior and that modifications in the environment can reduce the impact of a behavioral/emotional crisis.
Module 3:
Learners will be able to define de-escalation and explain its importance in managing behavioral/emotional crises.
Learners will understand evidence-based de-escalation strategies.
Learners will recognize common antecedents/catalysts that can set off a behavioral/emotional crisis.
Learners will understand the appropriate and limited use of emergency safety interventions (ESIs).
Learners will distinguish the difference between physical and emotional safety.
Learners will understand the importance of matching interventions to individual student needs.
Module 4:
Learners will understand how to support the recovery in a way that prevents future behavioral/emotional crises.
Learners will recognize strategies they can use to support student self-regulation and positive re-integration into the learning environment following a behavioral/emotional crisis.
Learners will understand the importance of debriefing, and how it aids in learning and in restoring the learning environment after a behavioral/emotional crisis.

Participants will need to complete all four content modules, including passing all knowledge checks with 80% or higher.
A Certificate of Completion will be issued upon successful completion of the course, which will need to be provided to the participant's LEA.
