Full course description
The Utah State Board of Education is committed to training and education that can help school communities build capacity for effective suicide prevention. This course is designed to help you play an important part in the prevention of youth suicide. The course is comprised of four modules:
Understanding Suicide
Identifying Risk Factors, Warning Signs and Protective Factors for Suicide
How to Talk About Mental Health
Creating a Culture of Caring

Understand the scope of the problem of youth suicide in Utah.
Build knowledge, attitudes, and skills to help prevent suicide.
Demonstrate an increase in knowledge and skills to recognize suicide warning signs in order to intervene with someone at risk for suicide.
Identify resources for referral and support.

(1) "A school district or charter school shall require a licensed employee to complete professional development training on youth suicide prevention every three years."
Administrative Board Rule R277-620Links to an external site. Suicide Prevention Programs
The purposes of this rule are (a) to provide for collaboration with the Utah Department of Health and Human Services to establish, oversee, and provide model policies, programs for an LEA and training for parents about youth suicide prevention programs; (b) to require an LEA to have and update youth protections policies; and (c) to direct an LEA to send notice to parents and protect the confidentiality of the required parent notification regarding bullying and suicide threats.

A school shall notify a parent if the parent's student threatens suicide; or notify the parents of each student involved in an incident and the action plan to address the incident. The school shall produce and maintain a record that verifies that the school notified each parent and tracks implementation of the action plan addressing the incident, if applicable. The school shall provide the parent with suicide prevention materials and information and information on ways to limit the student's access to fatal means, incuding a firearm or medication.
