Use of Emergency Safety Interventions with Students with Disabilities

This course is designed to educate learners about ethical and legal considerations related to the use of emergency safety interventions (ESIs). While Utah Code and Rule related to ESIs apply to all students, this course provides additional information specific to students with disabilities.
Learning Objectives:
Learners will identify the phases of the crisis cycle, including key characteristics of student behavior and appropriate adult responses.
Learners will define key terms related to Emergency Safety Interventions.
Learners will identify and understand adult roles during crisis situations.
Learners will explain the training requirements related to behavior de-escalation and intervention.
Learners will understand the Utah state law governing physical restraint and seclusion.
Learners will understand ethical considerations surrounding the use of physical restraint and seclusion.
Learners will identify the risks of using physical restraint and seclusion.
Learners will understand parental and administration notification requirements when an ESI is used.
Learners will understand monitoring requirements related to ESIs.
