Administration of Adrenal Insufficiency Medication | Training of School Personnel

This course provides comprehensive training for school personnel on the safe and effective administration of adrenal insufficiency medication. You'll gain the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to respond with confidence during an adrenal crisis.

Main Goals:

• Prepare school personnel to confidently and safely manage an adrenal crisis.

• Ensure all participants understand critical protocols for medication administration in a school environment.

• Equip staff with the knowledge to communicate effectively with emergency services, families, and other school staff during a medical emergency.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion, you will be able to:

• Explain what adrenal insufficiency is and how it affects children.

• Identify the signs and symptoms of an adrenal crisis.

• Demonstrate the correct procedure for preparing and administering emergency medication (e.g., Solu-Cortef, Decadron) via injection.

• Articulate the necessary steps for emergency communication, including when and how to contact 911, the student's family, and school administration.

• Document all actions taken during an adrenal crisis, following established guidelines.

Materials Needed:

• A printer to print learning materials for future reference.

Assessments:

Participants will be evaluated on their mastery of the course material through the following assessments:

• Multiple-Choice Quizzes: Short knowledge checks at the end of each module will test your knowledge of adrenal insufficiency, crisis signs, and emergency protocols.

• Scenario-Based Activities: Throughout the course, you will work through hypothetical adrenal crisis situations, outlining your step-by-step response, including communication and documentation.

• Practical Skills Demonstration: Once you have completed the course and received your certificate of completion, you will participate in a hands-on, simulated assessment. During this assessment, you will demonstrate the correct procedure for preparing and administering an emergency medication injection. This will be evaluated by a school nurse or a licensed provider whose scope of practice includes medication administration.
