Full course description

Asthma in Schools: Stock Albuterol Training Course (2020) (Includes the updated August 2025 Protocol)

This course is a mandatory training, provided by the Utah Department of Health, for school staff who volunteer to be a "qualified adult" authorized to administer stock albuterol in an emergency. It fulfills the Utah State Legislature's requirements for initial and annual refresher training and incorporates the latest emergency protocols for administration.

Course Goals & Objectives

The main goal is to manage asthma emergencies effectively and universally by ensuring qualified staff can rapidly recognize symptoms and correctly administer life-saving stock albuterol to any student in distress, regardless of prior diagnosis.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

Identify the legal requirements (Utah State Rule) for stocking and administering albuterol, including the August 2025 Protocol to treat a broader range of students.

Recognize signs and symptoms of mild, moderate, and severe asthma episodes.

Implement proper storage, maintenance, and emergency use procedures for stock albuterol inhalers and devices.

Execute the New Expanded Emergency Protocols, which cover:

Administration to students with an Asthma Action Plan (AAP) on file.

Administration to any student appearing to experience respiratory distress or an asthma emergency (often referred to as "undesignated students") by following the new, standardized emergency protocol.

Execute the required emergency follow-up protocols, including calling 911/EMS and contacting parents/guardians.

Successful completion requires an evaluation, typically a Knowledge Assessment, to confirm the participant's understanding of the updated Utah rule, asthma symptoms, and the procedural steps for administering the medication and following emergency protocols for both designated and undesignated students.
