Overview and Purpose
This essential online training is designed for school nurses in Local Education Agencies (LEAs) that receive USBE appropriations for nursing services. The curriculum aligns with the professional development emphasis of UCA 53F-2, providing critical knowledge and skills to support student emotional and mental well-being.
Main Goals
Enhance professional competence in student mental health support.
Increase awareness of trauma, substance abuse, and acute mental health issues.
Develop skills for early intervention, screening, and appropriate resource navigation.
Prepare nurses to safely respond during a mental health crisis.
Four Core Modules and Learning Objectives
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
Trauma-Informed Care: Understand trauma's impact on students and integrate trauma-informed practices into the school setting.
Alcohol and Substance Abuse: Identify signs of substance abuse, understand its effects, and manage initial response/referral protocols.
Awareness, Screening, and Triage: Recognize early signs of mental illness, conduct effective screening, and appropriately triage students to treatment. Learn protocol for acute crises and use of the 24-hour school safety and crisis line.
Suicide Prevention: Identify suicide risk factors and warning signs, and implement appropriate intervention and referral strategies.
Course Logistics
Materials Needed Computer or mobile device, internet access, and a web browser compatible with Canvas.
Main Assessments Completion of all four modules and passing a knowledge check/quiz at the end of each module.
