Full course description

Overview and Purpose

This essential USBE training provides the core knowledge and procedures required under Utah Code § 53G-9-505 for school nurses and the employee volunteers they train. The course ensures that non-licensed personnel are prepared to safely and effectively administer prescribed seizure rescue medication (e.g., Intranasal Midazolam) to students experiencing prolonged or convulsive seizures when a licensed nurse isn't immediately available.

Main Goals

Ensure Compliance: Meet legal requirements for training and documentation regarding delegated seizure rescue medication administration.

Rapid Intervention: Enable timely recognition of a seizure emergency and accurate medication administration.

Execute Emergency Protocol: Outline precise steps for storage, emergency follow-up (including calling 911), and post-administration monitoring.

Key Learning Objectives

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

Recognize symptoms that warrant administration based on the student's SMMO (Seizure Medication Management Order) and SAP (Seizure Action Plan).

Implement correct administration techniques for various rescue medications (e.g., intranasal, rectal).

Follow protocols for secure storage and mandatory emergency procedures (e.g., calling 911 and monitoring breathing).

Course Logistics

Materials Needed: Computer/mobile device, internet access, Canvas access, and physical training materials (e.g., a practice device) for the hands-on portion.

Main Assessments: 1. Written Quiz (online, minimum passing score required). 2. Competency Demonstration (in-person with the school nurse using a Volunteer Competency Checklist).

Certificate: Yes. A Seizure Training Certificate (Volunteer) is issued and signed by the school nurse upon successful completion of all steps.
