Overview and Purpose

This USBE module is designed for school staff, volunteers, and nurses responsible for conducting Tier 1 vision screenings in Utah schools. The course standardizes basic visual acuity screening procedures, ensuring accurate results, proper referral practices, and compliance with state guidelines to support student learning.

 

Main Goals

Standardize Procedures: Ensure all screeners use approved, consistent methods for conducting basic vision screenings.

 

Accurate Identification: Train personnel to correctly identify students who fail the screening or exhibit observable vision problems.

 

Effective Referral: Outline proper documentation and follow-up procedures to link students with needed professional eye care.

 

Key Learning Objectives

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

 

Define Screening Roles: Identify authorized screeners, including the Designated Vision Point Person (DVPP).

 

Apply Standards: Know the required grades and established passing lines (visual acuity thresholds).

 

Execute Screening: Master the correct use of screening charts and Instrument-Based Screening Devices.

 

Document and Follow-up: Properly complete the Vision Symptoms Questionnaire (VSQ) and manage all referral/documentation procedures.

Materials Needed: Computer/mobile device, internet access, Canvas access, and physical screening equipment/forms for application.

Main Assessments: Pre-Test and a final, required Post-Test (Module A), typically requiring a minimum passing score for course credit.
