Overview and Purpose
This USBE/UDOH course is the state-required training for school volunteers and lay staff assisting the nurse or Designated Vision Point Person (DVPP) with Tier 1 vision screenings (basic distance vision) in Utah schools. It ensures standardized procedures, accuracy, and adherence to legal and confidentiality standards.
Main Goals
Standardized Screening: Train volunteers to execute Tier 1 screening steps with fidelity to state guidelines.
Support Accuracy: Minimize errors in testing, student handling, and passing/failing determination.
Maintain Integrity: Ensure strict compliance with confidentiality and proper student positioning.
Key Learning Objectives
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
Define Scope: Identify their non-nurse role and the limits of the Tier 1 screening (e.g., no Tier 2 or color screening).
Execute Procedure: Master the setup, student positioning, and use of occluders/charts for distance visual acuity testing.
Determine Pass/Fail: Accurately apply the state's passing criteria (e.g., reading more than 50% of the critical line).
Follow Protocol: Understand handling of students who fail and the need for confidentiality.
Course Logistics

Main Assessments: Completion of all course modules and successfully passing a final quiz/post-test (minimum passing score usually required).
Certificate: Yes. A Certificate of Vision Screening completion is issued upon passing the final assessment.
