Full course description
Target Audience: School Nurses and approved licensed health care professionals.
Overview and Purpose
This advanced USBE/UDOH module is the mandatory training for professionals performing Tier 2 vision screenings—a higher-level evaluation required for students who fail Tier 1 screening, have significant vision concerns, or are undergoing Special Education/reading intervention referrals. The course trains screeners to assess functional vision beyond basic acuity.
Main Goals
Advanced Skill Development: Train professionals in complex screening skills (e.g., near vision, focusing, tracking).
Mandate Compliance: Ensure proper screening and referral protocols are followed, particularly in relation to Special Education evaluations and academic failure.
Refined Triage: Enable screeners to use the Vision Symptoms Questionnaire (VSQ) for secondary assessment and guide the decision for further screening versus immediate referral.
Key Learning Objectives
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
Determine Mandates: Identify students requiring mandatory Tier 2 screening or automatic referral per state rule.
Assess Functional Vision: Master procedures for screening near vision and advanced components like eye tracking, focusing, and near point convergence.
Utilize the VSQ: Effectively integrate the Vision Symptoms Questionnaire for secondary assessment and clinical decision-making.
Manage Outcomes: Implement proper documentation and referral procedures specific to Tier 2 findings.
