Full course description
This professional development course is designed to help Utah CTE teachers build and maintain safe, compliant, and well-managed instructional environments in alignment with Utah R277-911-3 safety expectations. The course focuses on practical, real-world application rather than theory alone, ensuring teachers can immediately apply what they learn to their own classrooms, labs, shops, and specialized learning spaces. (Course reviews, assignments and quizzes should be completed annually, with lab/shop inspections occurring at a minimum every 3-5 years on rotation.)
Participants will engage in meaningful learning activities that include hazard reviews related to hazardous materials, fire safety, equipment use, and general lab and shop practices. Teachers complete documented safety visits, inspections, and walkthroughs tailored to their instructional pathway, along with the development of maintenance schedules for areas such as animal labs and greenhouses when applicable. Knowledge is reinforced through pathway-specific quizzes covering areas such as agriculture, health science, FCS, trades, technology, and non-shop classrooms.
Throughout the course, teachers gather evidence of compliance, strengthen safety language in their course syllabi, and verify alignment with USBE equipment usage guidelines. Most assignments are embedded within the teacher’s existing environment and rely on tools and materials they already have access to, making the course both manageable and highly relevant. Upon successful completion of all course requirements, participants receive a certificate of completion that can be submitted to CTE directors or building administrators as documentation of safety training and compliance.
